Why Do Dental Implants Fail?

Dental implants can fail for any of the following reasons:
- The tissues around the implant posts may become infected, gradually growing weaker over time. If they deteriorate too much, they may no longer be able to give the posts the support they need.
- The implant posts or the tissues around them may become damaged after you suffer a blow to the mouth or jaw.
- Osseointegration may not take place as expected, meaning the implant posts do not join with the jawbone as they should.
Symptoms of Failed Dental Implants

Dental implant failure can be classified as early or late. Early failure takes place shortly after the posts are inserted into the jaw, but late failure can occur years (or possibly even decades) later. Both early and late dental implant failure can potentially result in the following symptoms:
- Severe pain around the implant posts.
- An implant post that feels loose or falls out completely.
- Bleeding, swelling, and other warning signs of an infection.
- Difficulty chewing even after the final crown, bridge, or denture has been placed.
How Dental Implant Salvage Works

The dental implant salvage process will begin once you call our office. After listening to you describe your symptoms, our team will make arrangements to see you as soon as possible. We’ll carefully examine your mouth to figure out what caused the failure to occur; then we’ll let you know what solutions are available and work with you to create a treatment plan.
Sometimes, it’s possible to save your dental implants. For instance, an infection can often be treated via conservative measures while the implant posts are left where they are. But in other cases, we may not have any choice but to take the posts out of your mouth entirely. Once your mouth is healthy again, you may be eligible for new implant posts.
